How to Navigate Your Job Search During Covid-19

Our world has changed, quickly, and learning how to adjust equally as fast can be stressful. Students are now learning from home, restaurants are only open for takeout, most companies have their employees working from home, and social distancing is our new normal. It’s a lot to take in at one time, especially if you were in the middle of job searching or were just beginning. You’re probably wondering how the pandemic is will affect your opportunities and given the situation is ever changing no one can know for sure how all of this will play out. But we don’t believe you should throw in the towel or feel defeated just yet. Here are a few strategies to help you stay on top of your job search and maximize all of your opportunities over the next few months:

1. Continue Applying – This one feels like a no brainer, but it’s easy to feel hopeless in this times. Keep sending in your applications. With how quickly things are changing a lot of companies are considering roles they didn’t know they needed or are finding themselves with positions open. Even if the company you’re interested in isn’t hiring at the moment getting your application in front of them could make all the difference when they are ready to start hiring.

2. Utilize Recruiters – Not sure where to start? Unsure how to reach the company you’re wanting to work for? Utilize recruiters! We’re still here and we are ready to help! Staffing agencies are free to you and they’re a great asset in helping you get in front of that hiring manager. A recruiter will usually have the scoop on a position or an opportunity they’re wanting to fill – which can help you land a job much faster than on your own.

3. Use your time wisely – If you’ve found yourself without a job and you’re wanting to get back into work quickly, don’t rush. Use the down time we all seem to have found ourselves with to better improve yourself. Spend an hour or two redoing your resume to truly reflect your skills, work with a recruiter to tailor your resume to every position you’re applying for, and truly think about the kind of position you want! You can even use the time to improve your skillset by enrolling in online courses offered through Linkedin or similiar websites. Spending time on the small things are something future you will thank you for!

4. Be Patient – A lot of companies are going through serious transitions right now to become more remote friendly. They may have positions open but may not have the time to fill them. Don’t give up if you don’t hear back immediately and keep following up. If you’re working with a recruiter they’ll do the following up for you and continue to ensure you’re at the top of the list when an opportunity does arise.

5. Be prepared – As mentioned above companies are going through transitions and are entering unfamiliar territory. Be the candidate who is flexible and solutions oriented! If a company typically does in person interviews, ask for a video interview. Come with solutions on how you can best fill the position, remotely, for the time being. Or if you’re position is an essential job come prepared to speak on how you will jump right in.
